The first examples of Greetings cards appeared in Germany around the fifteen century, given at Christmas called, Andachtsbilder.
Henry Cole, the first director of London's Victoria and Albert Museum has been credited the inventor of the modern day Greeting card,
The story is along the lines that each year he would send a hand written Christmas best wishes letter to all his family and friends,
come 1843 being pressed for time he commissioned a member of the Royal Academy to lithograph and hand colour one thousand copies of a card (shown above), which was then sent to Cole's relations, and friends.
At around the same time the Penny post was also introduced making the sending of cards affordable and ever more popular, right up until today where here, in the UK five thousand cards are bought every minute.
