Back in 1998 when I first started making cards there was a complete lack of information, What to put on a card? Does it need a message? Should it have a verse inside? How big should the card be? there was no way of knowing, some cards had all of the above, others simply had a splurge of paint or paper slapped onto the front!

So what follows is the evolution of my first range of cards which should hopefully help you to decide what to do and what not to do!

The initial design (around 1997-98)

Mirror board with some paper and tulip paint mounted on a 100 mm by 100 mm card blank.

Drawbacks:

Too small for most retailers as it gets lost in the racks, plus what's the card saying? absolutely nothing! It is not aimed at anyone or anything, It was just Art for Arts sake.

Design II (1999-2000)

The next stage was to make the card bigger, thus overcoming the display problem.
The design has also changed to something a little more meaningful in an abstract sort of way, it's now mirror board mounted over mulberry paper with a drawing of baby's feet!

Drawbacks:

Although the Art is suggestive for a Baby it's still not saying enough and needs to be more targeted towards a buyer.

Design III (2000-2002)

Now this looks promising!

It's targeted, the message is 'Congratulations A Baby Girl', the colours used are in keeping with the event and the drawing of the baby feet is also relevant.

Drawbacks:

It is a little cramped, the whole design seems to be squeezed into one part of the card, it's restrictive and doesn't leave any room to experiment.

Design IIII

Towards the end of 2002 the mirror board was dropped giving more room for the artwork, however it's still a bit cramped.
Today: (2003)

Gone is the cramped style, I've used more of the card which has given me more room to expand ideas and artwork.

The greeting is also crisper and more easily read, the design gets straight to the point and targets a buyer.
